We often hear interesting lights that have a hierarchy of light and dark, light where it should be bright and dark where it should be dark, but how bright should it be? How dark should it be? Where should I light up? Where should it be dark? So I call it “sloganizing,” and today I’m going to talk about it.

Q1: What brightness?

A1: I understand brightness as physical brightness and visual brightness.

A2: Of course not.

This is called low brightness — we can see in low contrast even though the visual brightness is dim.

Highlighting and strong chiaroscuro contrast can easily make people feel tired, while too uniform lighting will make the space lack of interest. I have always insisted on maintaining a reasonable chiaroscuro contrast in household lighting.

Q3: So what kind of contrast is better for home lighting?

At 10:1, or 9, we can see clearly what’s around us, and it’s a very sharp contrast.

3:1, or 2, is the threshold for discernible chiaroscuity, meaning below that it’s hard to tell what’s bright and what’s dark.

In home lighting scenarios, the maximum contrast should not be more than 9, even if we are very fond of diamond-sharp lighting. Good visual brightness can be achieved even at low physical brightness.

A chiaroscuro ratio of around 4 is more ideal, which means you’ll still look bright even if it’s not too bright.

Low light and shade contrast suits children room, old person room more, slightly tall contrast suits the scene with strong atmosphere feeling.
